Infertility

One of the most important issues that we help women and couples deal with is infertility.  Since we genuinely care for our patients like family, it matters to us when growing your family becomes difficult. This problem causes emotional, physical, and financial stress and can be difficult for the entire family. We help by diagnosing infertility, identifying its causes, and addressing the problems that are preventing you from getting pregnant. We hope you’ll find someone at Woodward & Associates who you trust and can talk to about this very personal issue.

Diagnosing Infertility

Infertility can be described simply as failing to get pregnant or carry to term after a full year of intercourse where no birth control methods are used. While it’s easy to determine that you’re having difficulty getting pregnant, it’s more difficult to find the specific cause of your family’s infertility. A problem with the woman, the man, or a combination of issues can prevent pregnancy.

Thorough testing is the first step toward resolving any fertility problem. A physical exam, pelvic exam, imaging, and other tests are conducted to create a clear picture of your unique situation. To achieve pregnancy and successfully carry to term, the entire reproductive process must be completed. The woman must release an egg, and that egg must be reached in the fallopian tube by viable sperm. Once fertilization has occurred, the zygote has to become implanted in the uterus. Even after the pregnancy is implanted, hormone levels and conditions in the uterus must be ideal to support the baby as it grows.

Causes of Infertility

Many different factors can interrupt the reproductive process.

  • Weight problems
  • Thyroid problems
  • Hormone problems
  • Endometriosis
  • Smoking or alcohol use
  • Genetic conditions
  • Low sperm count
  • Damage to the testes
  • Physical abnormalities

Once your doctor knows how and where the problem is occurring, we can give you a much better idea whether your infertility can be overcome through treatment. Some couples simply cannot achieve pregnancy, and in those cases, we can help you evaluate all the available options and make the best decisions for your family.
